SACRAMENTO, Calif. —

Georgia West, known as “Mother Rose,” is being remembered for her impact on the Oak Park community.

Scores of people gathered in Sacramento Thursday to celebrate the life of West, who died from cancer at 75.

West, the mother of former professional basketball star and Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson, was affectionately known as “Mother Rose.”

She owned Underground Books and was known for her graciousness and openness.

“When you met her you felt that she knew you her whole life,” Marian Love said.

Another community member recalled that she never lost her sense of hope and joy.
